MASLOW’S HIERACHY OF NEEDS

We planned an icebreaker activity with the school group that involved collecting information on the white board and writing on giant Jenga blocks to prioritise the importance of our needs in education, based on the theory of  ‘Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs.’

We explained and simplified the theory to the students in order to think about what helps human motivation and growth when it comes to education.  Students then went on to research positive quotes about education and each made a tile to create our own pyramid of needs as an art installation for the final exhibition.

This was also used at the Powerhouse community centre as a post box to collect information from the public about their school experiences.

Students learnt several skills along the way.  The pyramid was made in wood so students were able to develop practical carpentry skills, measuring, sawing, using power-tools etc.  They then painted a tile each using various methods such as sponging, stencilling and paint markers.

The activity was complete in the first term of the HLF project by a group of year 8 students from St Teilo’s school.

As well as learning new practical skills the students got to research education and how it works and this was a good introduction to start thinking about the heritage of school.
