MAPS THROUGH THE AGES

For the main creative part of the project we wanted to represent the heritage of our schools in Cardiff by creating two maps, showing what has changed geographically and educationally.

We started work on two large boards by re-sizing and printing an old survey map and a modern map of a section of Cardiff schools.  We pasted these onto the boards as a base to work over. After working out where the hills were, students added some detail of green areas and streets using PVA glue and tissue paper, mapping out streets, and creating balsa wood trees and houses.  Students researched old and new uniforms then cut out silhouettes to decorate representing each uniform.  Mini easels were created to keep some continuity with the large easels that were made previously.  The year 9 students from St. Teilo’s were split into smaller groups to make creative and research teams.   Students gathered information from the Internet and what they had learnt so far from the other activities, and wrote information in traditional school exercise books ready to display. As well as the students we also had some volunteers from Cardiff University to help facilitate along the way!

The students learnt to gather all their information collected so far, which was a great way of reflecting on the project as a whole and bring everything together after working on it over such a long time span.  They continued to learn more creative skills such as painting, papier-mâché, literacy skills, measuring, map reading, cutting with a Stanley knife, and working as a team.
